# Recipe Copilot in recipe building
Recipes are the foundation of any automation strategy on Workato. However, building a recipe can be challenging when you're uncertain about where to start. Recipe Copilot addresses this challenge by generating a sketch outline based on your description of the recipe you plan to build.
Recipe Copilot also supports the development and refinement of your recipes. Whether you add new steps, modify existing ones, or fine-tune configurations, Recipe Copilot provides a flexible and interactive process to ensure your automation aligns with your goals.
# Prerequisites
- Ensure that you have Copilot enabled for your workspace. Enabling Copilots requires an Admin system role. If you aren't assigned this role, contact your workspace administrator to enable this feature. Refer to our Copilots documentation for more information.
# Describe and sketch your automation
To create a recipe, outline the intended workflow and specify relevant apps. Recipe Copilot sketches the flow based on your description, providing a foundation for your automation process.
Recipe Copilot outline prompt
Phrase your prompts carefully to enhance the quality and relevance of Recipe Copilot's responses. Use the following tips to create effective prompts:
- State applications and objectives clearly to help Recipe Copilot understand your requirements and generate accurate suggestions.
- Use clear, descriptive language to outline your workflow or the task needing assistance.
# Examples of effective prompts
Consider the following examples to understand how to craft effective prompts for Recipe Copilot and what to avoid:
Vague: "Issue notification."
- This prompt lacks context, making it difficult for Recipe Copilot to generate useful suggestions.
Better: "Sync Jira to Slack when a high-priority issue is created."
- This prompt specifies the apps (Jira and Slack) and includes a condition (high-priority issue), but it still lacks details about the specific actions to take.
Best: "Notify the engineering team in Slack and create a Trello card when a new high-priority Jira issue is created, including the issue title, description, and due date."
- This prompt is clear and detailed, naming the involved apps (Slack, Jira, Trello), specifying the condition, and outlining the objective and required information. This gives Recipe Copilot the context it needs to generate accurate suggestions.
# Start over
Click Start over at any time to restart the recipe-building process. This action resets the process based on the recipe's current state:
- While the sketch is loading: Resets the recipe to its empty state.
- When the sketch is loaded and ready for review: Resets the recipe to its empty state.
- When configuring steps: Disables the Start over button.
- After all steps are configured: Retains the configured steps but clears fields from steps Pending review.
- After all steps are configured and reviewed: Retains both the steps and their fields.

# Update existing recipes
Recipes often require updates after their initial build as processes change. Recipe Copilot proposes updates and displays sketches of the proposed changes in the recipe editor when it detects changes to the initial processes.
You can request updates to existing recipes directly in the recipe editor chat. Copilot generates a sketch that outlines the proposed steps. This enables you to review the sketch, refine it if needed, and confirm the changes before Copilot updates the recipe. Copilot also explains the recipe’s structure and inserts comments to improve clarity when requested.
Complete the following steps to update an existing recipe:
Open the recipe you plan to update in the recipe editor.
Describe the updates you need in the Copilot chat. For example:
- "Add a step after updating a Jira issue to create a ServiceNow comment with the Jira issue link."
- "Modify the email notification step to include additional incident details."
- "Delete the email step and adjust subsequent actions."
Review the sketch Copilot generates. The sketch highlights steps with changes and shows the proposed updates.

Refine the sketch by describing additional changes needed in the Copilot chat or approve the sketch by clicking Approve .
Copilot modifies the recipe and remaps datapills based on existing configurations after sketch approval.
Click each step labeled with Pending review to review the updated configurations.
Accept or adjust the step’s fields based on your requirements.
Verify that datapills are mapped correctly. Copilot considers existing mappings when you generate updates but may require adjustments. Ensure that critical fields retain the correct values after you modify or delete steps.
Resolve missing or ambiguous fields. Copilot requests clarification when certain inputs are unclear or unavailable. For example:
Resolve missing datapills
Provide the necessary field values or explain your input requirements in the Copilot chat.
Revert changes if needed:
- Click Undo changes to revert the entire update and return the recipe to its original state.
- Describe the step or field you plan to revert in the Copilot chat to remove a single step or reset a specific input field configuration.
